Recession Worries

By J. Jones

Unless you have been stuck in the jungle for the last year or so you know about the problems with the economy right now.  If you are working a job overseas in the contracting world you may have noticed that jobs are getting a little harder to come by.  They are still out there but it may not be the time to make a move right now.  If you find out what your company is paying new comers you will find out that starting salaries have gone down so making that big move might not happen right now.  The good news is that if you have a job in the contracting world and have not been hit with the housing problem or the problems brewing in the financial market your current job may be a great place to lay low for awhile.  Make sure you know how much longer your company has left on its current contract with the government and plan as if they will not get renewed.  That means sock away as much as you can right now because although you may have felt a little of the current economy problems where you are at is much better then where others are at right now.  Make sure your bank is on solid ground and do not put more then what is insured in one bank.  If you are veteran and have not passed that age of 35 yet check out www.usaa.com they seem to be on pretty good ground and are a really good option if you are able to get an account with them.  They have worked out great for me.  Also check out https://www.schwab.com/public/schwab/home/welcomep.html they are a broker that seems to be doing good right now.  Make sure you do your own research on these banks to make sure you feel the same way.  I just wanted to give you all a couple of places to start looking if you have been thinking of changing banks.

With all that has been going on in the world’s financial markets I have been able to realize how lucky I am to be in a situation to sit this whole thing out right now as many contractors have.  It seems like every day you hear someone saying that they are delaying their move back to the U.S. or where ever ells they plan on settling down at until this crisis is over.  I guess from personal experience I have to advise that if you are currently contracted right now it may be a good idea to stick around that extra year or two and if you are thinking about contract work it may be a pretty good idea to start as soon as you can.  If you are not in the position to wait for that perfect contracting job you might want to think about just finding something that improves your ability to weather the storm right now.  Like many I have taken some hits in the stock market but it sure takes a lot of stress off if you have diversified your investments over the years and have a good paying job.  My current employer’s contract with the government will be over in a about a year and a half to two years and it is uncertain if they will have an opportunity to renew it or not.  So instead of taking off like I planned this year I will stick around an extra year and may even stay until the current contract is up just to put some money away.

Times might be tough right now but in tough times also comes opportunities.  Now that folks have less money to spend things like land and other investments are going to get a bit cheaper to buy.  Keep a look out for investments that will pay off in the long run and do your best to shield yourself from the current economic woes.

Expat Jobs: The one industry that is booming right now
By J. Jones

So many people out there are lucky to have a job and spend most of there time trying to keep it rather then get ahead.  The overseas job market is booming and getting ahead only takes the initiative of keeping an updated resume and decent networking skills.  Overseas jobs are pretty easy to get once you have had one before and it is not looked down on if you only work a couple years with a company.  Contracting jobs are only one or two year contracts and as long as you complete the contract you look very enticing to employers with overseas job openings.  getting to a pay scale of $80,000 is not that difficult if you are wiling to go where the money is and are willing to upgrade your education when ever you get a chance.  If you decide working in risky parts of the world is an option for you $100,000 plus is an easy pay scale to reach.  If you are making $140,000 overseas remember that about $85,000 of your income is nontaxable.  This makes your $140,000 more like $165,000 and you haven not even taken into account that your living expenses are paid for by the company.  You do not have to be an executive or high level manager to make over $100,000 you can be a plain old technician and make this much.  It is hard for these companies to get people to fill these overseas job slots don't you think it is time you took advantage of that.  Overseas jobs are a great way to get ahead and stay ahead.  With the dollar dropping those living overseas are hurt a bit by the  exchange rate but when you go from making $30,000 to $80,000 - $120,000 a year it is hard to complain.
